Comfortable Country

September 21, 2017

My passion for home decor started the day I stumbled across one special book: Comfortable Country by Enrica Stabile. It was the best buy ever for me.

I found it in my best-preferred library in London while I was spending some days there for an English course.

Well to be honest… my trip to London was also an incentive for trying finding some motivation to finish my Economics studies 🙁 whose choice was a bit spoilt by my parents, while what I had always been interested in was architecture, and especially decoration.

So it turned out to be the very most complete tour of home decor shops and this book found at Hatchards was the very cherry on top of the cake 🙂

I soon discovered Mrs Stabile was running a shop in Milan… L’Utile e il Dilettevole.
And I was living there at that time!  So first thing when I landed back I run to see her beauties live.
Oh gosh I almost melted… I wanted to live there, I wanted it to be my house, I felt completely in heaven and never again I’ve had that sensation anywhere else. And I couldn’t believe such a place could be there, in the middle of a city and country whose only possible style seemed to be contemporary design!!

Back to the book, it is great to see how this lady is able to mix old and new, colours which you would never think of, how she uses pattern (especially stripes and checks, which I love!) and how she arranges decoration in such a natural and balanced way.

The book is divided into two parts, Country Influences (changing seasons, peacefulness, nostalgia, utility and natural materials) and Country Rooms. Both are so inspiring, but I have to say I love the utility and natural materials sections. There’s plenty of inspiration there!

The shop has now moved from his original location and changed his name into Solamente Giovedì (became kind of show-room opening only once a week), and it is even more special than before to me. It is actually in a part of Milan which I love, having been living there for almost 10 years.

If you pass by Milano don’t forget to go and discover this hidden treasure!

See you soon!

Veronica
